Background:Men with idiopathic oligozoospermia (OOS) are often underrepresented in primary care. They often have little or no clinical opportunity to seek care. They are often self-limited on their own, and thus represent an important subgroup in the complex care of these men. The goal of this study was to compare the safety profile of the Sildenafil Citrate in OOS men (Viagra®).
Methods:This was a retrospective analysis of a single national center, including all patients seen by a physician. Inclusion criteria were OOS, age between 18 to 60 years, and male gender. The men were identified and enrolled by the physician in a clinical study. The men were followed up at the physician's clinic for at least six months, at which time they were instructed to take a nitrofurantoin tablet (Viagra®).
Results:Of the 507 men, of whom 207 received the drug, 4 (0.8%) died. Of the remaining 4 (0.8%) men, the median time to death was 4.3 months (IQR: 1.4 to 10.0 months). The median follow-up period was 2.2 months (IQR: 1.4 to 5.0 months) in the 4 men and 1.9 months (IQR: 1.3 to 4.0 months) in the 7 men. The mean baseline Viagra dose was 0.45 mg, with no significant change in the mean dose of Sildenafil. The median time to return of normal sperm motility was 6.1 months in the 4 men and 3.7 months in the 7 men. The median duration of Sildenafil use was 1.6 months (IQR: 0.7 to 1.8 months).
Conclusions:Viagra® was well tolerated, with few men discontinuing the drug. The median time to return of normal sperm motility was 4.1 months and 6.1 months in the 4 men and 3.0 months in the 7 men.
